Top Diagnostic Tests for Liver Health in Khulna Division (LFT, USG & FibroScan)

Why Liver Screening is Essential

The liver is responsible for over 500 vital biological functions, including toxin filtration, protein synthesis, and digestion. In southwestern Bangladesh, liver disorders—such as Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Hepatitis B and C, and Alcoholic Liver Disease—are increasingly common. Early detection through proper diagnostic tests is critical.

Core Diagnostic Investigations

#### 1. Liver Function Test (LFT)

A standard blood panel that measures:

**Bilirubin (Total, Direct & Indirect):** High levels indicate jaundice, bile duct obstruction, or red blood cell breakdown.

**SGPT (ALT) & SGOT (AST):** Cellular enzymes that elevate rapidly during acute liver injury or viral infections.

**Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP):** An enzyme related to bile ducts; elevated in biliary obstruction.

**Serum Albumin & Total Protein:** Measures the liver's synthetic capability.

#### 2. Ultrasonography of Whole Abdomen (USG)

A painless, non-invasive acoustic scan of the upper abdomen:

Identifies **Grade 1, 2, or 3 Fatty Liver** (Hepatic Steatosis).

Detects gallstones, bile duct stones, liver cysts, and early signs of cirrhosis.

*Preparation:* Patients should maintain 6 to 8 hours of fasting prior to abdominal ultrasound for clear visualization of the gallbladder and portal vein.

#### 3. Viral Hepatitis Markers (HBsAg & Anti-HCV)

Screening for Hepatitis B surface antigen and Hepatitis C antibodies is crucial before any major surgery, pregnancy, or blood donation. Early viral treatment halts chronic cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
