When Childhood Illness Becomes Urgent

Children are particularly susceptible to seasonal respiratory tract infections, viral colds, and bronchiolitis during weather transitions in coastal and riverine areas like Khulna Division. Knowing when a cold requires a doctor visit versus urgent emergency hospitalization can save lives.

Normal Fever vs. Danger Signs

#### Mild / Manageable at Home:

  • Fever under 101°F in children older than 6 months who remain playful, well-hydrated, and alert.
  • Clear runny nose, mild dry cough, and normal breathing rate.
  • *Action:* Sponge with lukewarm water, ensure plenty of fluids (breastmilk, ORS, soups), and administer pediatric paracetamol as directed by weight.
  • #### Urgent Pediatrician Consultation Required:

  • Fever exceeding 102°F lasting more than 3 consecutive days.
  • Inability to drink fluids or breastfeed.
  • Persistent vomiting or unusually lethargic behavior.
  • #### Critical Emergency Signs (Seek Immediate Hospital Care):

  • **Fast Breathing & Chest Indrawing:** Noticeable pulling in of the lower chest wall during inhalation (a hallmark sign of severe pneumonia).
  • Grunting noises, blueish discoloration of lips, or convulsions/seizures.
